The US regains first position in the rankings of the World Economic Forum’s Global Information Technology Report 2005-2006. Singapore, Denmark, Iceland and Finland follow, confirming the ICT [information and communication technology] dominance of Asia and the Nordic countries.

It’s as if you’re looking at one of those U.S. weather maps that stop at the 49th parallel, north of which there be nothing. Hard on the heels of Finland, i.e. at number 6 position [see the country rankings – pdf] comes Canada, not once mentioned in the press release, the summary [pdf], or the interview about the report with the WEF’s Chief Economist. This despite the fact that according to the chart in the press release Canada moved up 4 places in the last year, a gain only beaten by Taiwan among the top ten countries. As for the “dominance” of the Nordic countries, Iceland and Finland both slipped two places in the last year, and Sweden fell two also, to wind up behind Canada at the number 8 spot.

Canada is truly the invisible country.
