A New Approach to Mining Law

Lots of activity today on the legislative front in Ontario. Major changes to the Mining Act were unveiled by Michael Gravelle, the Minister of Northern Development and Mines who introduced the Mining Amendment Bill .

The major movement is to factor in aboriginal and cottage-owner interests into the process of exploration, development and extraction.

The White Paper from August 2008, the Executive Summary, and the March 2009 Budget announcement culminated today in Mr Gravelle’s First Reading Statement, the Ministry press room and the newswire release.

The media coverage from the Globe and Mail, National Post and the CBC.

Interestingly, the Northern Miner hasn’t bothered to post a story, and we’ll wait until next week’s edition before seeing how the industry is reacting.
