The Infographic of the Day site has a fantastic item with some amazing graphics comparing the 100 Largest Sites on the Internet [1].
The BBC charted the top 100 sites by unique users in January 2010, encompassing the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, U.S., and Australia. Oops – Canada didn’t make it, but suspect we are not that different.
If you think Google and social networking own the Internet – think again – and it isn’t shopping either. Yes these three types of sites are among the more widely visited – but all together they only account for about a third of Internet activity. Media/news sites do very well, as do reference sites, software and blogging sites.
When is comes to social networking Facebook rules – about 60% of traffic – no other profile-driven site is even close. Twitter much less popular (approx 1/5 of Facebook), and LinkedIn is even smaller (about 1/8 of Facebook). I think Facebook is becoming the Internet for loads and loads of people. MySpace didn’t even make the list.
And for the shoppers out there: eBay and Amazon comprise over 1/3 of traffic – but brick-and-mortar retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best-Buy also have a surprisingly large amount of traffic.
The 100 Largest Sites on the Internet Infographic of the Day article is really worth a look.
Enjoy, and thanks to Merrilyn Tarlton [2] for pointing this great article out to me.
