Fascinating Graphic on Consolidation in Legal Publishing

Huge nod to Sarah Glassmeyer of Valparaiso for producing the elegant graphic below which charts the rise of the three mega legal publishers.

I find it odd that the commentators on this graphic haven't pointed out the magic date late in the 1990s when the United States ceased to have its own legal publishing industry, all of the three majors having fallen to foreign ownership.

I might quibble about the inclusion of Brad Hildebrandt and David Baker's businesses when acquired by Thomson. And what does Elite have to do with legal publishing. They are all businesses providing technology products and services or management consulting services that happen to be owned by a legal publisher.

But it's still a great graphic [click on it to enlarge it]:

Legal publishers

Simon Chester's involvement with legal information goes back to the Seventies when he taught legal research at Osgoode Hall and served on CLIC's board - that was the Canadian Law Information Council. He has practiced law on Bay Street for almost thirty years and speaks and writes widely on legal, technology, ethical and professional issues.

    What a great visual! To round out the Canadian bits a little–when did Richard De Boo and Carswell merge? Early 1990s? And when did De Boo first start?

    Are there any other Canadian pieces we might contribute?
