CAIJ Makes Canadian Legal Periodical Index Available Online

Many of you already know the Index to Canadian Legal Literature (ICLL), LegalTrac, or the Index to Legal Periodicals on Quicklaw.

Here is another online source of Canadian legal journals.

The Scott Index to Canadian Legal Periodical Literature is now available on the website of CAIJ (Centre d’accès à l’information juridique), the network of 38 libraries serving members of the Barreau du Québec and the province’s judiciary.

The Index, a print-only product, was created in the early 60s by Marianne Scott. Scott was law librarian at McGill from 1955 to 1973, lecturer in the Faculty of Law from 1964 to 1974, and director of libraries at the university from 1975 to 1984. In 1984, she became National Librarian of Canada.

CAIJ explains that it will soon be possible to search the Index from the English catalogue page. It is now possible to do so from the French catalogue page (first select the radio button for “Articles de périodiques et commentaires d’arrêts”).

CAIJ will offer coverage from 1998 onwards. Content includes:

  • legal articles published in more than a hundred Canadian legal journals;
  • legal articles published in journals from related fields (ex : Canadian Journal of Political Science);
  • texts from legal conferences; and
  • case comments

Where available, CAIJ provides links to the full-text.
