The Friday Fillip: World Heritage Sites

Okay, so it’s way past the start of summer, at least where I am. And wherever you are, cold or hot, you’re thinking of going somewhere else, quite likely, because that’s what many of us do in summer. So I thought it might be a good idea to show you a few dozen photos of great destinations. If you can’t pack up and take off right now, you can at least plan, or, all else failing, dream of visiting one of these fascinating locations.

UNESCO World Heritage Site is an unofficial (!) tribute to that agency’s chosen protectorates, so to speak. And the tribute is via photographs, supplemented with a small amount of information and links to more of it. The photographs seem to be taken from a variety of sources, whether with or without permission is unclear; but by and large they are stunningly lovely.

Half a dozen of Canada’s heritage sites are pictured here, to tempt you to hop in the car and just do it.

The official UNESCO page of listed sites has a whackload more information, but not necessarily more attractiveness. There is a nifty map showing all the sites that lets you zoom in on the destination of your choice; and there are photographs there, but, as I say, without the pizzazz of the unofficial tribute site.

So where will it be? Lake Baikal? The Red Fort of Agra? Essaouria in Morocco? Or closer to home, a glacial lake in the Canadian Rockies?
