Law Library Leadership Institute, Help and Ideas Wanted
2008 Canadian Association of Law Libraries Conference
The Academic SIG Chairs are very pleased to report that all three proposals designed by the SIG for the 2008 Conference have been approved!
We had prepared two proposals for sessions for the 2008 Annual Conference, and one proposal for a preconference workshop.
The first session is:
“Military Law in Canada, What it Is and How to Find It.” We are pleased to announce that Brigadier General Ken Watkin, Canada’s Judge Advocate General, and Andrea Belanger, Library Manager, Office of the Judge Advocate General, will be presenting this session.
The second is: “Please Pass the Conch Shell: An Introduction to the Discipline of Cross-Cultural Communications”. We have two speakers lined up to present this session: Cynthia Flamm is a Senior Lecturer at the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs at Boston University, and M. Suying Hugh is the Work & Study Abroad Information Officer at the International Student Centre at the University of Toronto.
Leadership Institute
We are also very pleased to report that, our proposal for a preconference Law Library Leadership Institute was also approved! We are very pleased to have Penny Hazelton, Associate Dean for Library and Computing Services, Professor of Law, Director of the University of Washington’s Law Librarianship Program and Ernie Ingles, Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian, University of Alberta, author of the 8Rs Study, and founder of the Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute, as our facilitators for this one day event.
The Law Library Leadership Institute should be a terrific opportunity for mid-career and new librarians to start thinking about leadership and the skills and attributes that leadership entails. It will also provide some helpful advice about how to gain the skills necessary to advance one’s career.
If you are a mid-career law librarian – please consider the leadership institute as a valuable investment in your future. This session will be appropriate for law librarians in a wide range of careers.
Finally, we are pleased to report that Bonnie Preece has recently announced Thomson Carswell
has generously offered to sponsor the Leadership Institute luncheon. Thank you to Thomson!
