RTOR

Before I left for vacation it was my intention to draw on something from vacation to post to Slaw. It took a bit longer than anticipated (let’s just say that I had an unanticipated view of the Toronto skyline whilst on vacation and leave it at that) but I was able to find something in my travels that was a Slaw-ish topic.

This is more in the form of question and I hope some Slaw-ers out there can cast some light on the topic of RTOR- Right Turn on Red. (Some of you may have already figured out that I drove in Quebec.) My simple question is, why? Or more accurately, why not?

No Right on Red

I understand that the rules have changed and that RTOR is now allowed in some areas, but not in others (many others in my experience). I have even consulted a report prepared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of our neighbours, which states that RTOR is not enough of a danger to pedestrians to warrant getting rid of. This all begs my question as to what is the logic behind no RTOR in Quebec? Perhaps there is no logic but I ask the question anyhow.

  1. But I did read it! … oh sorry, thought you said RTFM. Chalk it up to NNAFSOFA :-)

  2. You think that’s weird – in Winnipeg, as I recall it, you could have a green light and a red light at the same time – apparently it means go but you may have to stop fast – why? In 9 years I spent in Winnipeg, there was never a real answer to this question, it just was.
