Indexing the Blogosphere

Technorati Weblog makes a point of continuously monitoring the “State of the Blogosphere”. In its latest installment, State of the Blogosphere, August 2005, Part 3: Tags they look at tagging or indexing for the first time.

Some interesting discoveries:

  • Currently almost one third of all posts include tags.
  • Nearly 100,000 unique tags were uncovered in the first week of the survey in January 2005.
  • They uncovered over 25 million tagged posts from January to July 2005.
  • The number of new terms being used as tags in all languages is growing by 12,000 terms per day.

And if you want to see something cool, they have had the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University create a funky computer visualization of how tagging has significantly increased since January in this quick video clip Technorati Tags. It might take a couple of minutes to load, but worth the wait. By the way, this clip is available under a Creative Commons noncommercial license, so I could see using it or adapting it for presentations.

  1. It’s interesting to watch tags converge on some “hotspots” — that is, as users create tags to suit whatever their own purposes might be, certain words become much more frequently used than others. These common tags then draw more attention, becoming ever more popular. You can see this graphically displayed at http://wordpress.org/support/, where users get to tag their requests for help; the more popular a tag is, the larger its display.

We could arrange for contributors to Slaw to be able to put in Technorati tags if people want.
