Research Profiles?

Is anyone doing anything interesting with regard to profiling their users? Do you have an intake survey when they start at your firm (or law school)? Has anyone experimented with building profiles via online surveys?

I’ve been thinking lately that it would be a great resource (on a number of levels) if we could build detailed profiles of each of our lawyers – either by a paper or electronic questionnaire, or by extending the information we collect in the personal profiles area on our Intranet.

Also related, are you’re tracking Library reference questions in a unique way? or linking reference questions back to some sort of Lawyer research profile?

Anyone want to share? :-)

  1. I have been thinking we should be doing this, much the way a good salesperson will gather and track information on a customer or potential customer. I wonder if there is something we can learn from the sales world?

  2. There’s a definite KM angle to it as well – defining firm expertise: What are your research interests that aren’t reflected by your practice? ie. What work do you want to be doing (but not currently) etc.

Research interests in a law firm setting can definitely be linked back to marketing and business development efforts. If they aren’t, they should be (IMO).

I’d also love to be able to help connect individuals within the firm who have similar research interests, but no idea who each other are…. again, research interests could equal common business development interests.
