Searching Within Government Sites
It’s always been frustrating that the search engines associated with government portals seem less than helpful – searchers used to the relevance rankings of Google or Copernic can get frustrated by the interminable lists that are offered by the federal government portal.
Now Google has announced that it’s launched a website to help you navigate around all those federal sites in Washington
For more information, see Information Week , and Search Engine Watch, which claims that this is mainly a relaunch of Google Uncle Sam.
And bringing this back North, how have Slaw users found the new search engine at the Canada Gazette?

Commenting on the new search engine at the Canada Gazette, it is definitely an improvement over what we had in the past. In fact, it is a little bit like the CANLII search engine. Its advanced search feature allows you to search by keyword and phrase, and gives you the option of limiting your search according to the various parts of the Gazette. It would be nice if, like CANLII, it gave you the option to highlight your search terms once you get to the document you want to look at. Overall, however, it is quite good.
Daniel. I’m going from memory – always dangerous – but I thought one of the features of the Mozilla Firefox toolbar was the ability to highlight search terms. You didn’t have to rely on the site to do it.
