Valentines and Google
Speaking of Google, which I just was, I’m wondering what you make of the Google Valentines Day image, which you see to the right. It’s a cherry where the “g” should be–that much is clear. But the thing dribbling down from it looks to me remarkably like half a pair of handcuffs. Now I know what you’re thinking, but you’re wrong. That’s not my thing at all.
So what is it supposed to be?

You’re uncharacteristically inaccurate today Simon…. something (or someone) on your mind? That is a chocolate-drizzled strawberry, not a cherry in chains.
Hmm. A strawb with a cherry stem? (Meant to be the “L” in google, by the way?) And how did they get that white circle in the middle of the chocodrool?
Nothing in particular on my mind, Michael — other than the fact that we got a pile of snow last night and it’s still coming down. But of course things must be worse on the West coast, no? Surely.
I don’t know… I suppose it is white chocolate? I guess you’re right that stem must be an “L”, since otherwise they’d be rebranding as “Googe.”
Is this an expression of anxiety about Google’s questionable information policies, or just distracted, clichéd marketing, or both?
I think there is a simpler explanation – looks to me like a “long stem” strawberry (sold at Loblaws) ideal when creating chocolate covered strawberries. I’m guessing this graphic was not created by someone who has actually made chocolate covered strawberries – the white lines could be white chocolate added after the dark chocolate has dried (something I’ve never tried).
Means the Google design folks were on auto-pilot.
And if you thought it looked weird, you should have seen it on a BlackBerry.
The weirdest part is that it does look like the L is missing….

Here’s the discussion from Google on it: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/strawberries-are-red-stems-are-green.html
They are pretending the missing L never happened.
