Proposed Legislation

Everybody has heard of the proposed amendments to the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act that have recently been introduced, but what of the other new bills before Parliament. I decided to take a look and see what lesser known but nonetheless, interesting pieces of legislation are in the works.

The first is Bill C-5: An Act respecting civil liability and compensation for damage in case of a nuclear incident. Which specifies that in the event of a nuclear accident the operators of said plant can be held liable up to 650 million dollars. Summary. (As a sidebar, $650 million seems a bit low to me. That’s the price tag of a new sports stadium.)

42 years later Canada is getting on board, the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States (ICSID Convention).

Bill C-14 would remove the exclusive privilege Canada Post currently enjoys, to collect letters bound for destinations outside of Canada. Summary.

Bill C-27 has received some coverage but should be of special interest at Slaw, as it is a bill which is designed to prosecute those who steal identity, which is a task that technology and that whole interweb thingy, has greatly facilitated. Summary.

There are more which I have not mentioned, and that doesn’t include Private Members Bills, but they constitute another category that might bear closer examination another day.
