Short Form Google Search

Here’s a third in the series of short posts about Google, appropriately enough about a short form of searching, this time. A Norwegian with the screen name of Mr. Calzone has created a site that makes short work of the otherwise long Google search string: no need to go to his website first, no need to download an app: simply put your search term at the end of the string http://gog.is/ Thus, for example, a search for “slaw” would be http://gog.is/slaw. You can use more than one search term if you separate them with commas or + signs, so avoiding all that cabbage would be http://gog.is/slaw+law.

All this makes sending someone a search a real piece of cake. And if you don’t happen to have a search box at the top of your browser, searching itself becomes that much easier. Congrats to Calzone for a nifty notion.

  1. I looked at this service, but it really feels pretty stupid to me. I really don’t see a point to it.

First, because if I want to search using Firefox, I’ll hop into the search bar instead of typing a URL. OR, with Chrome, just type the search and it will auto-search Google.

Secondly, if I want to link to a google search result, I’ll just use a URL shortening service like tr.im or is.gd, instead of using a longer service like gog.is.

Overall, I just feel it’s a pretty stupid service and it’s not necessary at all.

  2. Just saves you one click, Jonathan. Not earth shaking — but not stupid either.

  3. Mr. Dingman, Here is a link to an interview with Mr. Calzone during a recent podcast with Amber MacArthur & Leo Laporte (starting at 18 minutes) in which he describes his intent.
