Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today the appointment of Daniel J. Caron as Librarian and Archivist of Canada, effective April 25, 2009.

Mr. Caron, currently Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Management and Horizontal Integration Sector, Library and Archives Canada, replaces Ian E. Wilson, who is retiring from the Public Service after a very distinguished career.

The Prime Minister also announced that, upon his retirement, Mr. Wilson will hold the title of Librarian and Archivist of Canada Emeritus as President of the International Council on Archives.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank Mr. Wilson for his creative contributions and dedication to public service over his ten years at Library and Archives Canada. The Prime Minister wished Mr. Wilson all the best in his future endeavours.

The related backgrounder on Daniel J. Carron shows he has held a progression of senior positions in various federal government departments over the past 13 years, including with the Library and Archives Canada. He is neither a librarian nor an archivist, but does hold a Master of Economic Studies and a Doctorate of Applied Human Studies.
