New Google Results Page

The new Google search results page finally got propagated as far as my browser mere moments ago.

Google will now use a full two column display (with a third column on the right for ads). Where before options were strung out across the top (“web images blogs” etc), they’re now arrayed at the left in bold colour:

The various filters and facets affecting the results can be displayed in a drop-down list. It doesn’t seem possible to set that list to expanded or collapsed within your preferences, but perhaps I’ve missed something.

Comments

  1. The new search results page looks different also if you are searching via Google Canada. In addition to the options Simon describes you also get links to

    * The web
    * Pages from Canada

    Personally, I like the new filters.

  2. Personally, I want the old search interface back.

  3. I notice mine also offers : “Search English or Italian pages,”since Google has noted I search/read a lot of Italian.

  4. my search results are displaying an unloaded picture symbol next to each result – what’s that all about?…anyone?

  5. Simon,

    What I think is really great about the new Google results page is the ability to filter Blog posts, Updates (Twitter), and Discussions (forums, etc). This is especially handy for finding real-time information for the search query. This is a great way for Google to combat the features that the Bing search engine had brought to the table.

    Cheers,
    Michael
