World Cup of Law – II
World Cup 2010 has been full of intrigue and interest; in posting about the legal aspects of the world cup last week I felt that was too much of interest to post at one time so this post continues the legal aspects of the world cup as we prepare for the round of 16.
It seems that World Cup 2010 has been a boon for South African Law Firms.
FIFA does indeed have a legal committee but I haven’t had much luck trying to discover the terms of reference for the legal committee nor even a description of what it does. I feel fairly safe in surmising that the issues of IP and copyright dot their agendas.
Closer to home, the far reaching implications of the World Cup have extended from South Africa to Toronto, where the city has altered it’s drink laws to accommodate World Cup revelers.
On the darker side, an event of this magnitude often brings with it implications in the sex trade which should receive more attention than they do.
To experiment a bit, I have gone to SAFLII, the South African Legal Information Institute and run a couple of searches in order to see if this event has worked it’s way into the seams of the South African legal system. This is obviously not the last word on the issue, merely a snapshot utilizing a resource that is readily available. A simple, general search of “world cup” returns 57 items ranging from legislation to case law to government orders.
