The Metis in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario took another step toward self-government on Friday, signing recognition and self-government implementation agreements with the Government of Canada. The agreements with the Metis Nation of Alberta (MNA), the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan (MNS), and the Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO) include commitments to negotiate self-government treaties with Canada in the next two years. …

The UCP Government Responds to Justice Paul Rouleau’s Report on the Emergencies Act

On Friday Justice Paul Rouleau released his report of the inquiry into the Trudeau government’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act in response to the convoy protests in Ottawa and elsewhere in Canada. Rouleau determined the Feds’ decision met the “very high threshold” necessary to invoke the Act. The Alberta government is not pleased with Rouleau’s decision and Justice Minister Shandro issued a brief statement. …

Fighting fire with fire – Eviction under the Condo Act remains exceptionally rare

Before CAT, condominiums typically brought compliance applications under s. 134 of the Condo Act to force unwilling residents to comply with the Condo Act and the condo’s declaration, by-laws and rules. And beyond ordering compliance with the Condo Act, declaration, by-laws and rules, judges have the broad discretion to “grant such other relief as is fair and equitable in the circumstances”. Notably, a judge (and not the CAT) can order a resident be permanently removed from the condo in extreme circumstances. …
