Seems that web publishing company O'Reilly and CMP are claiming that “Web 2.0” is their trademark.

In a recent decision, the Sixth District Court of Appeals (California) has afforded bloggers the same kind of protection usually reserved to journalists. Here is an extract from the judgment:

The trial court denied the motion on the ground that the publishers had involved themselves in the unlawful misappropriation of a trade secret. We hold that this was error because (1) the subpoena to the email service provider cannot be enforced consistent with the plain terms of the federal Stored Communications Act (18 U.S.C. §§ 2701-2712); (2) any subpoenas seeking unpublished information from petitioners would be unenforceable through contempt

From June 21st to June 23rd, at the Government of Canada Conference Center in Ottawa, there will be a Retreat for selected legal officers (military lawyers) in Ottawa. On the morning of Day 1, the schedule has the following two sessions:

Though not the worst of its kind, this “signed post” is a visual equivalent of certain portions of the Income Tax Act. On a Friday morning at 8 a.m. with a couple of kids in the car and only two spots to choose from…

Yet signs like thse are the only way to go if you have to have microscopically small jurisdictions. Most of that spot legislating happens in neighbourhoods and on roads. This year the Canadian Association of Law Libraries (CALL/ACBD) presented its annual award for legal publishers at its conference in May to Québec-based online vendor SOQUIJ. One highlight that stuck out in my mind is that SOQUIJ is now making some of the Québec case law available translated into English. From the SOQUIJ website:

I stumbled upon this post and I’ve been twisting my head back and forth trying to absorb and understand this. I haven’t had much time to really sort it out but something tells me it’s worth knowing about. What do legal researchers really want?

From technology, I mean. We spend a bit of time here at Slaw fielding the news about this and that technical development initiated by others and helping each other cope with change that if not forced on us then certainly is, like the weather, happening without our informed consent. But if we had our druthers, what would our druthers be?

I know we want others to get beyond email. The wish has been expressed here more than once, for example, that legal publishers should wake up and smell the RSSes, so to speak. Ordinary . . . [more]

I’m interested in finding out how current awareness services are evolving in other organizations. Most of our clients have indicated a preference for “push” services, but I’m told that the company is moving toward a “pull” environment. What are your organizations doing?
