I’m pleased to share that Lawblogs.ca has added another 18 new Canadian law blogs. Since our update in mid-September, the following websites have been added to the list:

And for Slaw’s Law Librarian readers, you’ll want to check out the latest addition by Tim . . . [more]

Track Federal Bills With RSS/XML

I am greatly afeared that this may be old news to some (though I did search slaw.ca to try to make sure that it has not been mentioned here), but it was news to me. And very cool news indeed. The federal parlimentary website has added XML/RSS tracking for the status of Bills. Want to know when a bill is out of committee, or has been sent to the Senate for a sober second thought? Just go to LEGISInfo, choose your favourite bill (or your least favourite bill). Then click on the tag and let your browser or . . . [more]

Interviewing the Chief

Since one doesn’t often get a chance to hear Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin being interviewed candidly and directly, here is a link to a video of last night’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin entitled Setting the bar high: Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin on her role as Canada’s top judge.

Among other minor indiscretions, she appears to like the Ottawa Senators: toujours rouge.

We’ve come a long way since Felsky’s, “The Berger Affair and the Independence of the Judiciary” (1984), 42. U.T. Fac. L. Rev. 118, which showed Chief Justice Laskin so anxious to protect the . . . [more]

2009 ABA Blawg List Posted

It’s awards season – we’ve already seen the GG’s and the Giller announced. The list for Canada Reads is coming out today, and the ABA Journal has released its third list of the top 100 law blogs.

Congratulations to Jordan Furlong. Law 21 was nominated (again), with the following commentary:

Jordan Furlong has a knack for looking at trees and seeing a forest. He doesn’t blog legal news as it breaks, but looks for trends and provides skeptical analyses of what all of the yay-sayers are spouting about the present and future of the practice of law.

Canadian Searchers Are Different

That’s according to Google in a statement made this afternoon. Jonathan Lister who heads up Google’s Canadian operations made the following comments to CP in relation to a spate of job vacancy adverts that Google is placing to recruit new staff:

Google is now looking for a new head of industry, software engineers, administrative assistants and other staff to help take advantage of Canada’s base of extraordinarily plugged-in Internet users

Free Access Is Here to Stay

Free access to legal information in Canada is here to stay. Of that fact, there can be no doubt.

Bob Berring, the man who has triggered the recent Slaw debate on the future viability of free services, sounds like a man from the past, nurtured on West and Lexis and very happy with the services that they provide. Like him, I visited the West editorial offices early in my career and was equally impressed by West’s ability to gather free content, add editorial value, and sell and resell public records to the legal profession. I was also impressed on my . . . [more]

The Honourable Mr. Justice T. David Marshall

I recently had the pleasure of meeting a man with an extraordinary career which has been untimely cut short and I want to use this platform to draw attention to a true renaissance man. Justice David Marshall of the Ontario Superior Court, MD, LLB passed away unexpectedly a week ago today. While I did not know Justice Marshall well, upon meeting him one could not help but marvel at his career and list of accomplishments; regardless of his list of accomplishments, I was immediately struck by the genuine interest he took in the people he had just met. Over . . . [more]

Twittering Politicians

Shaunna’s mention of TwitterCommons prompted me to point out poliTwitter, which aggregates federal and provincial politicians’ Twitter feeds. The interface is a tad clunky (the dropdown menus are awkward to use), but there’s lots here to like.

Non-politicians tweeting on political issues are captured in the “community” display. You can sort by party affiliation, and the statistics are fascinating. Trend tracking via hastag, of course. And the search allows you to find your MP/MPP. . . . [more]

Nancy Byerly Jones Re-Post: Celebrating Great Holiday Moments … Ignoring the Not-So-Good!

Cross-posted on the Lawyer Success Tips blog

Although we have never met, over the years I have avidly read and learned a lot from Nancy Byerly Jones. She has written some great articles and created some awesome resources on risk management and claims prevention. My good friend and fellow PMA (practice management advisor) Jim Calloway pointed out a great post Nancy made on her blog yesterday.

Nancy gives us all solid practical advice for making the most with family and friends on this US Thanksgiving (we actually did Thanksgiving in Canada about a month ago), and indeed on . . . [more]
