Oxford English Dictionary Gets a Makeover

If you have a big enough dictionary, just about everything is a word.”
Dave Barry

There is something lovely about opening a package and finding a new book. To my surprise, this feeling also occurs when you get an email saying that your eBook purchase from the “I want to buy this as soon as it is published” list receipt comes by email. Another remarkable new book thrill appear in my inbox today in a note about the newly revamped OED website.

Oxford is proud to unveil a dramatically new OED Online: a redesigned, reengineered site that offers not only new content, but a new look, new features and functionality, and a wealth of changes and updates that will improve the research experience.

I signed up for a trial after researching prices. I believe the pricing offers are very reasonable, at least for organizations like mine. I could have taken the powerpoint tour, but I prefer to play with words whenever possible.

As you can see from the screenshot below, the new OED offers a nice, clean, easy to navigate site.

My new favourite OED feature – RSS feed for the Word of the Day. Todays word was definitely selected with a librarian in mind.

  1. Don’t forget to check with your local public library to see if they have this as part of their online subcriptions for their patrons. I know that here in Houston, it is available for free to all HPL card holders.

  2. Great tip Greg. Thanks!
