Québec Bar Association CAIJ Portal Launches Special Section on Province’s New Code of Civil Procedure

This is a follow-up to the February 1, 2016 post about Background Material on Québec’s New Code of Civil Procedure .

CAIJ, the Centre d’accès à l’information juridique (the network of courthouse law libraries associated with the Québec Bar Association), has created a special section on its website that brings together information about the province’s new Code of Civil Procedure that came into force on January 1, 2016.

The Code underwent a major overhaul that aims to reduce delays in the justice system by giving priority to amicable dispute resolution processes such as mediation, arbitration and conciliation, and by increasing the powers of judges to manage cases, foster cooperation between the parties, and reduce the number of examinations and expert opinions.

Visitors to CAIJ will be able to find:

  • an annotated version of the Code with a list of changes in legal terminology, a concordance between the new and old Codes, background commentaries for each section from the provincial Ministry of Justice, links to related regulations, as well as links to debates in the Québec National Assembly and positions adopted by the Québec Bar Association
  • case law
  • secondary literature
  • links to Code-related research questions answered by the CAIJ libraries
  • links to relevant external sites (for example, new court rules, notices to the profession, etc.)
