ALM Article on Law Librarianship 2006

ALM has published a nice summary & survey on Law Librarianship for 2006.

It’s good to see an article like this… The length isn’t so overwhelming that it couldn’t be passed along to others. The quotes seem well reasoned and balanced, it covers a good range of topics, and it includes optional survey results at the end for further detailed reading.

On the Canadian side of the fence, the CALL/ACBD Law Library Statistics Committee have the next edition of the Private Law Libraries/Corporate Law Libraries Operations Survey in the works. This survey only gets compiled every three years, so there’s no excuse for not getting yours in! :-)

  1. Yesterday I attended a standing room only meeting about the ALM survey. The full results will be posted to their website. My understanding is the survey is based on the AMLAW 100 law firms (or is it AMLAW 200?).

ALM Editorial Director and Editor of The American Lawyer spoke about the method used in conducting the survey and creating the results. He also fielded questions from the audience. The common plea was for more questions on demographics and other areas so that the data could be sliced and diced in other ways.

ALM appeared to have an amicable relationship with the law librarian crowd, although the request for a column by a librarian aimed at lawyers in The American Lawyer was met with hesitance.

On a related note, some of us (Canadians) were asked whether a similar survey was done for Canadian law firms. We couldn’t think of one widely available.

  2. Sorry- forgot to add the name. The director from ALM who spoke is Aric Press. Was so busy getting his title in I forgot to add his name!
