The Friday Fillip: Kick Some

I’m having that deja blog feeling, but even if this app has been featured on Slaw before, it can’t hurt to bring it around again. I’m talking about a simple little time waster called Kick Ass. It exists as an iOS app, but you might find it more useful in its bookmarklet form, because the simple point of the “game” is to destroy websites, element by element.

You find yourself on a website that needs some… adjustment. Perhaps it’s an ad, perhaps it’s an irritating blog post or — hard to imagine — a headshot that just doesn’t smirk they way you like. Click on the bookmarklet and launch the wedge, point it to the offending bit, and click the space bar: BLAMMO! the target’s gone. Nice little graphic effects accompany the destruction, and as you move the wedge around the page, rocket exhaust pours out of it. All in all quite satisfying. (Esc. resumes normal programming.)

Since the New York Times mentioned it in a recent article on addictive time-wasting games — and, indeed, embedded it on their site to let you wreak havoc on the old Gray Lady — it’s become popular enough that you can now exchange the wedge destroyer for other “space ships” or design your own.

And yes, it would work on Slaw, so you don’t need to try.
