Season for Giving

The ice storm passing through Central and Eastern Canada is making many of us give pause. Many people are hours–and possibly days–without power, and some (the horror) are without cell phone or Internet access. It makes us thankful for what we do have, and what we typically take for granted. I am seeing a lot of people pulling together to help one another.

What about those who have to go without on a longer term basis? How are we pulling together to help them?

In Toronto I am particularly seeing a lot of support for the Daily Bread Food Bank:

obaStaffFoodDrive2013

Ontario Bar Association staff held a food drive competition that brought in 716 kg (1580 lbs) of non-perishable food for the Food Bank. See: Ontario Bar Association Staff Weighs in Big with Donations for the Annual Food Bank Drive

HoHoTO holiday party

The 6th HoHoTO holiday party Thursday night raised $40,000 (and counting) for the Food Bank. This party is a collaboration between the tech/start up and PR folks in Toronto with 100% of proceeds going to the Food Bank. I volunteered my time for the 2nd year as part of the Twitter team for the raffle.

Photo above is the HoHoTO party at the Mod Club in Toronto. We had over 500 people in attendance.

Next up will be the “Hangover Auction” via Twitter featuring items that were not claimed in the raffle plus some additional prizes. We were supposed to run it last night but due to the ice storm in Toronto we are postponing (date to be announced).

What fundraising activities are taking place in your community?
