CBA Wellness Hosts 14th Annual Wellness Workshop
CBA Wellness hosted its 14th annual Wellness workshop this past weekend in Winnipeg. The workshop is designed to provide training and resources to lawyer assistance program representatives from across the country. This year, the CBA Wellness Board of Directors decided to expand the scope of the workshop and include an outreach session for local lawyers as part of its ongoing effort to engage the legal community in wellness issues. The outreach session was titled Addictions, Recovery, Reckonings and featured Michael Bryant, an Ontario lawyer and former Attorney General for Ontario. Michael’s story is compelling; he detailed his personal struggle with addiction and the steps he took to begin recovery. Michael also highlighted the need for the legal community to continue working on decreasing stigma related to alcoholism, addiction and mental illness. His presentation served as a reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done with regard to these issues. CBA Wellness is committed to raising awareness of the importance of wellness and supporting the legal community through programming and research.
2017 CBA Wellness Award of Excellence
Dana Schindelka is this year’s winner of the CBA Wellness Forum Award. A litigation and dispute resolution specialist with DLA Piper in Calgary, Dana has tried throughout his career to deliver – and live – the message of the importance of health and wellness.
He has served as Chair of both the CBA Wellness Board and the Alberta Lawyers Assistance Society’s board. In 2007, he co-authored a report identifying the need for peer support for Alberta lawyers, which became what is now a well-established program. As a writer he has contributed to SLAW and various CBA publications on behalf of CBA Wellness. The award was presented in Winnipeg as part of the CBA Wellness workshop.
