Lawyers Who Act & Give Back: Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry – the Remount

[Visual design by Amy Lloyd]

Before J.D. Vance, we had our own cat lady, Twiss—an unapologetic lover of cats and Cats. Twiss, along with a cast of other lovable characters and a fantastic script inspired by the great Shakespearean actress Seana McKenna, is set to take the stage at the Palmerston Public Library Theatre (Toronto) from October 25-27.

Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry is exactly what it sounds like—the title doesn’t mislead. A group of people attend a play to watch Seana McKenna watch paint dry. And why not? She’s Seana McKenna, after all. She’s that good. But as Cecil, the logical character, remarks: “It’s not nothing. It’s something. Something special.”

In 2014, Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry became a must-see at the Fringe Festival, earning a 3-N rating from then NOW Magazine, along with glowing reviews. Precedent Magazine said it was, “totally worth the $12”[1] – we’ve since upped our prices. The Sam Mooney from Mooney on Theatre “highly recommended it.”[2] The Lactors’ Studio* (see below for definition) had a blast writing, directing, producing, and performing it. We even had an internet troll, a sure sign that something clicked. Best of all, the play’s net proceeds supported the Law Society Foundation’s Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program, raising $7,000 in 2014—and we’re doing it again!

Now with added minutes of watching, all proceeds from the play’s ticket sales will be donated to the Law Society Foundation’s Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry program. The Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program is a registered charitable organization, responsible for the delivery of hunger relief efforts both through meal service in Toronto and community support in nine centres across Ontario. Now in its 26th year, it serves almost 1300 meals each week to those living in poverty or homeless without dependable access to a nutritious meal. It is an organization solely dependent upon charitable donations to fund operations and an average of 75 volunteers each week to assist with service.

If you’re interested in supporting a good cause or even just a night of laughs and fresh perspectives on the arts come to Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry.  Tickets are on sale now and we’d love to have you join us watch paint dry.

*Lactor [lak-ter] – noundef. a lawyer who acts – deriv. a mash-up of “lawyer” (a person whose profession is to represent others in a court of law or to advise or act for clients in other legal matters) + “actor” (a person who acts in stage plays, etc.; a person who does something; participant).

The Lactors’ Studio is a company of real-life lawyers who met while performing in Nightwood Theatre’s annual fundraiser, The Lawyer Show. We christened our particular clan of like-minded lawyer/actors “the lactors”, and the name has stuck. We have a passion for theatre, creativity and hanging around with each other.
