In years past, I had an occasional series of posts going to address the various meanings and implications of “Lord Acton’s Dictum” — power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I have canvassed the insights on it we can get from The Lord of the Rings and from The Master and Margarita; explored the relationships between power and deceit and power and morality; and discussed an article about the scientific findings on the effects of power on its wielders. Except for the last one, these were all written before the beginning of the first Trump Presidency, and I think they hold up very well in light of its 0bject lessons on the subject of power and corruption. …

Participant Survey – August 2026

The Civil Resolution Tribunal anonymously surveys people who have gone through the tribunal process. We use this feedback to improve the way we serve the public. We report the results every month on this blog. We had 28 responses to our participant survey in August 2026. We’re pleased to report that participant satisfaction remains strong in most areas. We’re taking measures to address a high volume of claims and improve timeliness in all areas of the dispute resolution process. …

Customizing the OBS Studio Start Up Image

I am a long time user of OBS Studio. It’s a video and audio management tool that works great for virtual meetings and video interviews. It intercepts your camera and audio inputs and allows you to combine multiple inputs into one single output. Your virtual meeting software will see OBS Studio as a single camera, giving you a great deal more control about your virtual, visual presentation. But recently my virtual meeting apps, both Microsoft Teams and Zoom’s Workspace, have been randomly dropping the camera. This isn’t a huge issue except that the placeholder image for OBS Studio is not the best professional image to provide. …
